Online safety and safeguarding is crucial to the use and development of responsible and ethical generative AI. At Synthesia, we take a preventative approach to safeguarding individuals and communities whilst ensuring individual freedom. As an online platform, we have the responsibility and duty of care into safeguarding our users - and specially vulnerable groups among them.

It is important to note that restricted content is only allowed with Custom Avatars. Any Restricted Content that is depicted using stock avatars will not be allowed.

It is also important to note that prohibited content is applicable to private and public individuals regardless of whether they are real or fictional.


Animal Exploitation & Abuse

Animal Harm and Domestic or Wild Animal Trade

Synthesia encourages you to have conversations about Animal Harm responsibly. You are able to create videos with our stock avatars to inform and educate your audiences about verifiable governmental or non-profit organisations that work in animal rescue and protection. Including content about how to report animal harm, resources for rescued animals and pet owners, etc.

❌ Advocacy or aspirational statements in favour of any type of Animal Harm. This includes content trivialises the dangers and environmental impact of these practices.
❌ Explicit, graphic and non-graphic depictions of Animal Harm events or activities (e.g., illegal bulldog fights), specially content that is crude, violent or intended to harm or traumatise the audience.
❌ Advocacy, support, endorsement or glorification of Animal Harm and Trade groups or perpetrators. Including any content that justifies or condones their behaviours and crimes.
❌ Content soliciting, threatening or advocating for domestic or wild animal trade or harmful activities
False or misleading content of non-profit organisations, fake animal rescues or sanctuaries.
❌ Graphic, non-graphic (including fictional) depictions of fights between animals or animals and humans, depictions of acts of torture or abuse against live animals (including religious or cultural sacrifices).


Bullying, Harassment and Stalking

Bullying & Cyberbullying

Synthesia encourages you to have conversations about Bullying responsibly. You are able to create videos with our stock avatars to inform and educate your audiences raise awareness about bullying & cyberbullying: causes, detection, prevention strategies, resources for victims and their families, internal HR training, etc.

This can also include public awareness campaigns against bullying or cyberbullying, initiatives and advocacy groups, campaigns against sexual harassment, public and indecent exposure, informational and expert analysis and insights of psychology, law enforcement, cybersecurity discussing the emotional, legal and technological aspects of bullying and cyberbullying, as well as informational and educational content about sexual harassment and sexual education. This includes harassment prevention strategies and resources for victims as well as content explaining Consent and other sexual education topics.

❌ Content or language that promotes, supports, encourages or participates in harassing, humiliating or threatening an individual or group. This includes any content that also violates other policies.
❌ Content created to repeatedly contact someone without their consent or in a soliciting manner
❌ Promoting, supporting, endorsing or calling for action to bully someone or calling them to self-injure or harm themselves (or a group). Expressions and wishes for someone to suffer injury, serious disease or severe physical harm or pain.
❌ Content that targets, curses or negatively describes someone including expressions of contempt or disgust, creates personal attacks and defamation, spreading false information, slurs, offensive terms.
Non-consensual sharing of personal, private or sensitive information.
❌ Promotion, support, endorsement, advocacy, encouragement or calls for action of bullying/cyberbullying including glorifying and inciting and mockery, harassment or threats to victims of bullying/cyberbullying and their families or communities

Profanity

Synthesia encourages you to have conversations about Profanity responsibly. You are able to create videos to inform and educate your audiences about sensitive or controversial topics that includes profanity within an appropriate context.

⚠️ Educational and Documentary content includes profanity within this context, where it is clearly relevant and necessary to convey a message accurately.
⚠️ Informational and educational content about sensitive or controversial topics that includes profanity within an appropriate context. It should not personally attack, harm or harass any individuals or groups.

❌ Content that is targeted and malicious towards private or public individuals and uses profanity to degrade, humiliate, bararge and harm.

Sexual Harassment

Synthesia encourages you to have conversations about Sexual Harassment responsibly. You are able to create videos with our stock avatars to inform and educate your audiences about sexual harassment such as detection, prevention strategies and resources for victims. This includes resources such as internal company training materials (e.g., HR policy on Sexual Harassment).

Stalking

Synthesia encourages you to have conversations about Stalking responsibly. You are able to create videos with our stock avatars to inform and educate your audiences and raise awareness about stalking and cyberstalking: causes, detection, prevention strategies, resources for victims and their families, internal HR training, etc.

Instructional content with explicit instructions or demonstrations on how to stalk or engage in stalking behaviour including content that encourages or glorifies stalking experiences or celebrates stalking behaviour and content that encourages individuals or groups to use stalking as a form of revenge or retaliation against someone.
Instructional videos on how to perform or what tools to use to engage in non-consensual surveillance, such as promoting the use of hidden cameras, tracking devices or other technologies.
❌ Content including graphic or explicit depictions of stalking incidents such as disturbing images or footage of victims being followed or harassed.
❌ Mockery, harassment or threats of of stalking and their families and communities.


Child Endangerment & Safety

Child Safety

Synthesia encourages you to have conversations about Child Safety responsibly. You are able to create videos to inform and educate your audiences about Child Safety such as detection, prevention, reporting, law enforcement resources, victim resources, etc.

Child Trafficking

Synthesia encourages you to have conversations about Child Trafficking responsibly. You are able to create videos to inform and educate your audiences about Child Trafficking such as detection, prevention, reporting, law enforcement resources, victim resources, etc.

Adult Nudity

Synthesia encourages you to have conversations about Adult Nudity responsibly. You are able to create videos to inform and educate your audiences about Adult Nudity such as general or reproductive health education.

Synthesia encourages you to have conversations about Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA) responsibly. You are able to create videos with our stock avatars to inform and educate your audiences about verifiable governmental or non-profit resources for SEA and NCII victims and survivors.

All prohibited content in this category includes any content that exposes someone's personal data such as

Any content that features minors in a way that could be exploited, endanger their safety, or violate child protection laws is prohibited.

Personal and Private Data

Synthesia encourages you to have conversations about Personal and Private Data responsibly. You are able to create videos with our stock avatars to inform and educate your audiences about personal and private data, data privacy regulations and legislation.

⚠️ Testimonials and Reviews that include personal experiences with products or services, as long as the information shared is relevant to the review and does not infringe upon data privacy regulations.

❌ All prohibited content in this category includes any content that exposes someone's personal data with malicious intent, potentially leading to personal harm and therefore violate other content categories such as Identity-base hate, SEA, criminal activities, personal safety, etc.

Categories include:

Personally Identifiable Information (PII): full names, addresses,phone numbers, email addresses, Social Security numbers, passport numbers, etc.

Financial Information: credit card numbers, bank account details and personal financial transaction records.

Healthcare Information: medical records, prescription information, and any other health-related data (e.g., allergies)

Login Credentials: usernames, passwords, and any information that could be used to gain unauthorised access to accounts or systems.

Location Information: detailed real-time or historical location data that can compromise an individual's safety or privacy.

Protected attributes and characteristics: information about someone's gender expression, sexual orientation, religion, case, immigration status, nationality, ethnicity, race, disability, civil status, pregnancy.


Suicide & Self Harm

Self Harm, Suicidal Ideation and Intent

You are able to create videos with our stock avatars to inform and educate your audiences about verifiable governmental or non-profit resources for mental health as well as informational and educational content about self-harm, suicide or eating disorders such as training materials for parents or caregivers.

⚠️ Informational and educational content about self-harm, suicide or eating disorders. Content created with the aim of encouraging and supporting individuals who have difficulties such as support groups, resources, recovery advice, inspirational content.
⚠️ Education or training materials for first-line responders, mental health practitioners and helpline volunteers.
⚠️ Personal testimonies and stories of Self-Harm, Suicide and ED survivors as long as there are not violent, crude or graphic depictions of incidents that could harm the audience

❌ Promotion, support, endorsement of self-harm, suicidal intent or ED (eating disorders). Including content that trivialises or glorifies self-harm or suicidal intent and images, videos, verbal depictions of victims, suspicious behaviours, specific incidents.
Instructional content on how to engage in self-harm, eating disorders or suicide. Including content on how to hide or conceal these behaviours to others.
❌ Content mocking, humiliating, disparaging or denying the dangers of self-harm, suicide and eating disorders or their victims, families and communities.

❌ False and misleading information about helplines, non-profits and other groups that provide help and resources to self-harm, suicide and eating disorder patients and victims.
❌ Content providing dangerous or misleading diet tips, weight loss tips, or any behaviours or activities that promote harmful and extreme methods to loose weight that could put someone's health at risk. Content promoting online communities for people who are experiencing suicidal intent or self-harm thoughts. Including memorial pages for people who have died by suicide.
❌ Promotion, support, endorsement or instructional content about online challenges or hoaxes that could encourage someone to take part in an activity that could cause them harm
❌ False or misleading advice and unverified information about mental health conditions. Including content that perpetuates harmful stereotypes and stigma around mental health.
❌ Suicide notes or letters with or without context - including fictional.


Repeat Infringer

Any content, that goes against our Content Moderation Guidelines, created by a repeat infringer who's been notified of previous moderation offences and subsequently banned, is prohibited and grants a direct block.
Synthesia shall have the sole discretion in reaching the final decision.
