Platform Integrity refers to the overall state of trustworthiness and reliability. Platform integrity encompasses a range of factors that allow the platform to operate ethically, securely and in line with it’s intended purpose.

It is important to note that restricted content is only allowed with Custom Avatars. Any Restricted Content that is depicted using stock avatars will not be allowed.


Branded Content

Intellectual Property Rights

Customers create and and own the content created through Synthesia, as well as what audience it is shared with. We ask and expect that anyone using Synthesia to create content will make sure that they have the right to use it in their videos. We ask and expect that customers respect other individuals or organisations copyrights, trademarks and intellectual property rights.

At Synthesia we are committed to assist and help organisations promote and protect their intellectual property rights and we take any reports of infringement very seriously.

Unauthorised Branding Use

Synthesia encourages you to create videos with custom or webcam avatar for authorised branding and business promotion as long as this does not violate any Content Moderation Policies.

Restricted Content (For Studio and Personal Avatars ONLY)

Prohibited Content (Stock Avatars)

⚠️ Authorised branded use and business promotion is allowed with custom/webcam avatars as long as the content does not violate any Content Moderation Policies

❌ Synthesia Terms of Service prohibit the use of Stock Avatars to create user generated content that is made for promoted, boosted or paid advertising on any social media platform, TV Broadcasting, as part of non-fungible tokes (NFTs) or any similar media.

❌ To portray Stock Avatar in User Generated Content alongside or in connection with regulated or not age-appropriate goods or services including:

  • Alcohol

  • Tobacco

  • Nicotine (including vaping products),

  • Psychoactive substances

  • Firearms

  • Gambling

  • Contraceptives

  • Sex toys

  • Escort services

  • Dating services

  • Adult entertainment venues and similar.


Inauthentic Behaviour

Impersonation

Synthesia encourages you to have conversations about Impersonation responsibly. You are able to create videos with our stock avatars to inform and educate about Inauthentic behaviour (general or in social platforms) and impersonation. This includes internal training materials for organisations (e.g., HR training).

Restricted Content (For Studio and Personal Avatars ONLY)

Prohibited Content (Stock Avatars)

⚠️ Satire, comedy or parody content that uses impersonation as an artistic expression, including famous figures and celebrities as long as it remains respectful and within the boundaries of other Content Moderation Policies (e.g.., Harassment).

⚠️ Educational content where representing individuals serves a historical or educational context e.g historical events that are presented in a responsible manner and within the boundaries of other Content Moderation Policies

❌ Content in which Stock Avatar is making any kind of statement of opinion, including expressing any personal preferences or experiences as if they are Stock Avatar’s preferences or experiences.

❌ Content in which a Stock Avatar is being used to represent a member, employee or real-life person without disclosure.

❌ Content in which a Stock Avatar is being used to represent specific community groups or being diagnosed or characterised with specific alignments such as minor or major illnesses, mental health problems etc.

❌ Content in which any Avatar (Stock, Webcam or Custom) is being used to impersonate a private or public individual (alive or deceased).

❌ Content in which any Avatar (Stock, Webcam or Custom) is being used to impersonate a current or past Synthesia Employee.

Support, promotion or instructional content on how to impersonate - both in Synthesia and other platforms, including calls to action, statements of intent or admission to have done such behaviours in any online platform.


Civil Rights & Ethical Use

At Synthesia, we are committed to ensuring that the use of AI-generated stock avatars is fair, transparent, and respectful. Our Civil Rights and Ethical Use Policy safeguards the dignity of the individuals these avatars represent, while protecting viewers from misleading or deceptive content.

At Synthesia we kindly request you to ensure that the selection of stock avatars aligns with the nature of the product, service, or message you want to promote. Specifically:

  • Visible Identity Characteristics Consistency: a stock avatar selection must not be manipulated in a way that misrepresents or distorts the real-world implications of the product or message. For example, using avatars of certain genders or ethnicities to falsely suggest the product is endorsed by or intended for specific communities when it is not.

  • Cultural Sensitivity:restraint from using avatars to create content that misappropriates cultural symbols, traditions, or customs of ethnic groups. The use of Stock avatars to market products linked to cultural practices or identity (e.g., cosmetics, apparel) should consider whether the avatar represents the target audience or community respectfully and accurately.

  • Avoidance of Tokenism: restraint from token representation of a group through a stock avatar simply to meet diversity expectations, without meaningful context or alignment with the content.

Individuals and organizations creating content with Synthesia technology and platform are responsible for the content they create, and therefore for disclosing the following:

  • Any relationships or sponsorships related to the product or service being marketed if a stock avatar’s appearance (gender, ethnicity, etc.) could potentially mislead the audience about the source or target demographic of the content.

  • Whether stock avatars are used to represent individuals if that usage could cause viewers to believe they are interacting with real people connected to the content.

Prohibited Content (Stock Avatars)

Non-Discrimination: any attempt to use Stock Avatars to promote, perpetuate or reinforce any form of discrimination, whether explicit or implicit, and any behavior that violates a anti-discrimination laws applicable to any relevant jurisdiction.

Deceptive Practices: any attempt to use Stock Avatars to obscure the true origin of content, or to exploit the likeness of avatars in ways that would be considered deceptive or misleading regarding the real-world attributes they represent and their identity characteristics.

Impersonation and False Association:

  • Any attempt to use Stock Avatars to falsely represent or imply endorsement or association by a particular race, ethnicity, gender or religion group, community leader, or demographic, when no such relationship exists.

  • Any attempt to mislead viewers into believing an avatar’s appearance, visual identity characteristics or background corresponds to the actual creators behind the content, when there is no relationship or alignment.

Stereotype Reinforcement and Identity Based Hate: any attempt to use Stock Avatars to portray or perpetuate harmful, offensive or damaging stereotypes, including but not limited to depictions that reinforce biases based on any protected identity characteristics such as (but not limited to) race and ethnicity, gender, religion or belief, sexual orientation, age, disability.

Policy Enforcement

Synthesia will enforce this policy rigorously and take appropriate action for violations, which may include: rejection of content, account suspension or termination, as well as potential legal consequences for severe or repeated violations of this policy.

Civil Rights Impact Assessment

Synthesia commits to conducting regular assessments on how stock avatars representing different visible identity characteristics (such as race and gender) are being used across the platform. The findings will inform future updates to this policy to better align with evolving civil rights and ethical standards.

Reporting Violations of this Policy

Customers, actors, or third-party organizations may report suspected violations of this policy through our Content Integrity Policy Page. Synthesia will investigate all claims thoroughly and take appropriate action based on findings.


Repeat Infringement

Any content, that goes against our Content Moderation Guidelines, created by a repeat infringer who's been notified of previous moderation offences and subsequently banned, is prohibited and grants a direct block.

Synthesia shall have the sole discretion in reaching the final decision.
