What are Roleplay Sessions?
Roleplay Sessions are interactive practice environments where your team has live conversations with AI avatars to practice real skills and get automated feedback. Learners practice things like closing a sale, handling objections, or delivering feedback.
A Session combines a short teaching video, a live roleplay with an AI persona, and automated feedback that scores how the learner performed.Whether a learner can retry within an attempt depends on the Retries setting, and they can take the Session again as a separate attempt. Managers can track progress and see where coaching is needed.

How Roleplay Sessions work
A Roleplay Session has three parts that work together as one experience. Each part uses a different scene type, and the three run in sequence.
Scripted scenes
Scripted scenes teach the skill and show what good looks like. An instructor or AI avatar demonstrates the technique using concrete examples. Scripted scenes run 2â5 minutes and set up the scenario the learner will practice.
Roleplay scene
The roleplay scene is where the practice happens. The learner has a real-time conversation with an AI avatar who plays a specific role â a customer, prospect, manager, or peer â and responds to what the learner says. The AI poses realistic objections and follows a scenario you define. The conversation is scored on the skills you set up.
Feedback scene
The feedback scene appears after the roleplay scene ends. The AI coach walks the learner through what they did well and where they can improve, and shows scores for each skill. Learners see their attempt score, a transcript of the conversation, and detailed feedback on how they performed against each skill criteria.

Who uses Roleplay Sessions
Roleplay Sessions support three types of user, and each one works with the product in a different way.
Learners go through the full experience. They watch the scripted content, do the roleplay, get feedback, and can retake the Session to improve their score.
Managers assign Sessions to their teams, track who has completed them, review individual attempt scores and transcripts, and use analytics to see which skills are improving and where coaching is needed.
Enablement Admins design and build Sessions, manage the skill definitions and scoring rubrics, publish Sessions to learners, and run reports on program performance.
What you can measure
Roleplay Sessions generate a score for every skill you want to assess. You can measure skills such as objection handling, active listening, discovery questions, and closing technique â whatever matters for your training. Scores are based on what the learner actually said, not on a checkbox list.
Learners can see their score and their improvement over repeated attempts. Managers see aggregate data: which teams are progressing fastest, which skills are improving, what the pass rate is, and how many attempts it takes to reach passing.
Learners can replay their conversation with a synced transcript, jump to specific moments, and hear the audio recording. This lets learners review their own recording to self-coach. The score reflects what the learner said.
Availability and licensing
Roleplay Sessions is available in three versions.
Free is included with every Synthesia plan. You can build unlimited roleplays and share them by link, up to a monthly cap on plays across your organization. The Free version has no Learner Portal and no analytics. To learn more, check out What are the Roleplay Session caps for each plan?
Self-Serve is available on the Basic, Starter, and Creator plans and covers 1 to 100 learner seats, bought with a credit card. It unlocks the Learner Portal, assignment, tracking, scoring, analytics, and uncapped plays for seated learners.
Custom is for teams that need more than 100 learner seats, teams that need SSO, SAML, SCIM provisioning from an HRIS, implementation services, or a Customer Success Manager, and every customer on an Enterprise plan. Custom plans are arranged with our sales team.

Example use cases
Roleplay Sessions fit a range of training programs. Here are four common use cases.
Sales training: Reps practice cold calls, objection handling, and discovery conversations with realistic prospects. Managers track call technique and see which reps need coaching on closing versus discovery.
Customer service: Agents practice handling difficult customers and escalation scenarios. Coaching feedback flags where agents over-apologize or miss upsell opportunities.
Leadership development: Managers practice feedback conversations, one-on-ones, and difficult conversations. Feedback highlights whether they asked open questions, listened actively, and surfaced coaching moments.
Compliance and policy: New hires practice real scenarios such as handling customer data requests, security violations, and regulatory questions, and get scored on compliance awareness.
đŹ FAQs
What languages are Roleplay Sessions available in?
What languages are Roleplay Sessions available in?
Roleplay Sessions are available in English, French, German, and Spanish. A Session can be translated in the same way as any other Synthesia video. Further languages are in testing.
Do Roleplay Sessions use video credits?
Do Roleplay Sessions use video credits?
Roleplay and feedback scenes consume no video credits. Any regular studio scene in the same video consumes credits as normal, and your plan's monthly credit allowance still applies to those scenes. Building a Session therefore draws credits for the studio scenes it contains.
Can more than one learner take part in a roleplay at the same time?
