A Roleplay Session lets you practice a real conversation with an AI avatar and get instant feedback on how you did. This guide walks through the whole flow: finding your Session, setting up your microphone, having the conversation, and reviewing your results.
Finding Your Session
Log into the learner portal at
learn.synthesia.io.Go to My assignments.
Select the Session assigned to you to open it.

Watching the intro
Some Roleplay Sessions start with an intro video scene that sets up what the roleplay will cover. If yours includes one, play it to get the context before you begin, then continue to set up your microphone.
Setting up your microphone
Before you start your roleplay you will meet the avatar you'll be speaking with. The screen also notes that the session is recorded for playback and analytics.
Select Enable your microphone.
Allow microphone access if your browser asks.
Select Join call when you're ready to begin.

Having the conversation
Once you join, the roleplay begins and you talk with the avatar in real time. Speak your responses into your microphone, then listen to the avatar's reply and continue the back-and-forth.
The controls at the bottom of the call let you:

The avatar plays a specific role for your scenario and responds to what you say. Treat it like a real conversation.

💡 Mistakes are part of practice. Respond naturally and don't overthink it. You can retake the Session afterward to improve your score.
Coaching check-in
After the roleplay there will be a brief coaching check-in, where a coach avatar helps you reflect on how the roleplay went. If you'd rather move on, select Skip.

Receive Feedback
When the call ends, your feedback appears automatically. An AI coach reviews your results with you, walking through how the conversation went and giving guidance on what to work on. You can ask the coach questions about your attempt, and it will help you understand your results and improve.
Alongside the coach, you'll see your Overall score with a pass or fail marker, and your Biggest opportunity — the single change that would help most.
The feedback has two tabs: Overview and Score breakdown.

The Overview tab summarizes the attempt in two parts: What's working well and Try this next time. Each gives specific, personalized points based on your conversation.

The Score breakdown tab shows your result for each skill assessed in the Session. Each skill has a rating — for example, Below expectations or Not demonstrated — and a percentage. Select a skill to see more detail.

Retaking to Improve
If you didn't pass or want a higher score:
In the feedback scene, select Retry
The roleplay resets; you can re-enter immediately (no page reload)
Apply the coaching feedback this time
Get new feedback on your attempt
Retry option
You can retake as many times as you want. Each attempt is scored independently, but your best score is what counts.
✍️ Don't see a Retry option? The creator has set this Roleplay Session up without in-attempt retries. You can still do the Roleplay Session again, but it will be recorded as a separate attempt rather than a retry of your current one.
Tips for Success
Before: Set aside uninterrupted time. Test your audio in the mic check.
During: Respond naturally. Mistakes are data, not failures.
After: Read coaching carefully. It's personalized to your conversation, not generic.
Retakes: If you didn't pass, identify one skill to focus on. Improvement from attempt 1 to 2 is the goal.
Outside the Session: Practice the skill in real conversations. Apply the coaching. That's where real growth happens.

Check that your browser has permission to use your microphone, and that access is allowed for the learner portal.
Confirm your device microphone works in another application.
Try a different browser or device.

Feedback is generated automatically and can take a few moments to appear.
Wait a few moments for the feedback to load.
Refresh the page.
