Roleplay Sessions comes in three versions: Free, Self-Serve, and Custom. This article explains what each one includes and how to decide between them.
Free
Free Roleplay Sessions is included with every Synthesia plan. Use it to build roleplays and share them with a small group.
You get:
Unlimited roleplay creation
Share page links that recipients open without logging in
A capped number of plays each month across your organization
You do not get the Learner Portal, learner analytics, or assignment and tracking.
One play means a person loads the roleplay video on the share page. Once you reach the monthly cap, access pauses until the cap resets the following month. To learn more, check out What are the Roleplay Session caps for each plan?
Self-Serve
Self-Serve Roleplay Sessions is for customers on the Basic, Starter, or Creator plan who need between 1 and 100 learner seats. Buy it in-app or from the landing page with a credit card, with no sales conversation and no contract. To learn more, check out How do I buy or upgrade to Self-Serve Roleplay Sessions?
Customers on an Enterprise plan buy Roleplay Sessions through sales rather than by credit card, whatever number of learner seats they need.
You get everything in Free, plus:
The Learner Portal, where you assign roleplays and manage learners
Analytics covering completion, scores, skill breakdowns, and delivery metrics
Learner accounts created by email invite or bulk CSV upload
Uncapped plays for learners in a seat
You do not get SSO, SAML, SCIM, HRIS sync, a Customer Success Manager, or volume pricing.
✍️ Learner seats bill separately from your Studio plan. Self-Serve Sessions runs as its own subscription, so you can pair it with any Studio plan, including a Studio plan on a different billing cadence (for example, an annual Studio plan with monthly learner seats). Changing, upgrading, or downgrading your Studio plan does not cancel or change the price of your learner seats.
Custom
Custom Roleplay Sessions is sales-led, for more than a 100 learner seats or enterprise plan customers. Speak to our sales team to learn more.
You get everything in Self-Serve, plus:
Unlimited learner seats
SSO and SAML sign-in for learners
SCIM provisioning, which syncs learners from your HRIS
A Customer Success Manager and implementation services
Volume pricing

Deciding which plan you need
Choose Free when you want to try Roleplay Sessions, build a scenario, and share it with a few colleagues. You do not need to track who completed it.
Choose Self-Serve when you have up to 100 learners, want to assign roleplays and see how people perform, and want to buy without a sales conversation.
Choose Custom when you have more than 100 learners, or when you need SSO, SCIM provisioning from your HRIS, or support from a Customer Success Manager.
📌 The Learner Portal and analytics are available on Self-Serve and Custom plans. On the Free plan you can create and share roleplays, but you cannot assign them or track learner progress.

What happens to my learner seats if I cancel or reduce them?
Seat reductions and cancellations take effect at your next renewal date. Your seats stay active and usable until the end of the paid term, and there is no prorated refund. You can manage or cancel seats yourself from Account Info, then Billing.
Does downgrading my Studio plan affect my learner seats?
Does downgrading my Studio plan affect my learner seats?
No. Your Session learner seat subscription is independent of your Studio plan, so downgrading, upgrading, or even lapsing to Studio Freemium does not cancel, pause, or re-price your existing learner seats. They continue to run on their own billing cycle.
