How do I access version history for my video?

Learn how to access, restore, and manage version history in Synthesia to review and recover previous states of your video project.

Written by Jess Diaz-Gomes

Synthesia automatically saves a version of your video each time it is generated, and auto-saves a snapshot every 30 minutes. Version history lets you view these saves, see who was editing at the time of each snapshot, and restore or duplicate earlier versions when needed.

✍️ Version history shows which collaborators were editing at the time a snapshot was auto-saved, or who generated each version. It does not log who made which specific edits within a version.

How to access version history

To open version history for your video:

  1. Open your video in the editor and select Edit.

  2. Select the menu option next to the video title at the top of the editor.

  3. Select Show version history.

  4. The version history panel opens on the right side of the editor.

✍️ Autosave is on by default. Synthesia automatically saves a snapshot of your project every 30 minutes. A new version is also created each time you generate your video.

How to restore a previous version

To restore an earlier version of your video:

  1. Open version history using the steps above.

  2. Hover over the version you want to restore.

  3. Select the three-dot menu that appears.

  4. Select Restore and confirm.

πŸ’‘ Want to keep your current version too? Select Duplicate instead of Restore to create a copy of the earlier version without overwriting your current project.

πŸ’¬FAQs

Can I restore a previous version of my video?

To restore a previous version, open version history, hover over the version you want, select the three-dot menu, then select Restore and confirm. This replaces your current working version with the selected one.

When is a new version saved?

A new version is created each time you generate your video. Synthesia also auto-saves a snapshot of your project every 30 minutes. You can check whether autosave is active by looking at the cloud icon in the top right of the editor β€” a checkmark means your project is saved, and a red X means it is not currently saving.

Why can't I see any versions in my version history?

If your version history appears empty, check that autosave was active during your editing session by looking at the cloud icon in the top right of the editor. If autosave shows as saved but your versions are still missing, try refreshing your browser or rebooting your system. If the issue continues, contact the Synthesia support team.
