Legal Advice and Information

Written by Jess Diaz-Gomes

Quick Summary

If you’ve received a moderation prompt on your script, it may be because your content appears to be discussing topics restricted under our Legal Advice and Information policies.

Because of the harm misleading legal advice and information can cause, our policies place some restrictions on what legal content can be created with Stock Avatars.

📌 For our Enterprise Users: Some exemptions to the policies outlined in this article may apply to your workspace.

If you are having issues generating content, please reach out to your Customer Success team member.

How to Fix This

If you want to use a Stock Avatar, you can review your script to:

  • Ensure explainers about laws and regulations are general, easily verifiable, and neutral

  • Avoid statements which instruct the audience to take specific actions in situations involving legal rights, or could create legal disputes or liabilities

  • Remove personal opinions about specific laws, regulations, judgements and legal practitioners

  • Remove statements which promote a specific lawyer or law firm

If it isn’t possible to make these changes (e.g. For specialist legal education content, or content promoting a law firm), you may be able to create your content if you switch to a Custom Avatar. You can discuss a greater range of legal content topics with a Custom Avatar than with our Stock Avatars.

Note: Even if you include a disclaimer statement (e.g. This is not legal advice), your videos may still be rejected by moderation if they discuss restricted topics.

Examples

Examples Allowed with a Stock Avatar

  • You can pursue legal action, and potentially recover your losses through a settlement or an award for compensation

  • Elle Woods & Associates is a criminal defense firm, with particular expertise in defending wrongful convictions.

  • The Courts can hold members personally liable if the LLC is found to be operating as an alter ego of its owners.

  • If you have been involved in a motor accident, you should avoid making any statements until you have received legal advice.

  • To comply with the Anti-Money Laundering Act, all staff must request a valid identification document from every customer we serve.

  • Donoghue v Stevenson established that a manufacturer owed a duty of care to the end consumer even without a direct contractual relationship.

Examples Allowed with a Custom Avatar

  • You should pursue legal action, it is likely you will recover your losses through a settlement or an award for compensation.

  • Charged for a crime you didn’t commit? Give Elle Woods’ team a call, they’re the best defence lawyers around.

  • In my view, the Supreme Court should not have adopted such a narrow interpretation of the statute in this case.

  • The duties from Donoghue v Stevenson should not apply here, because there is insufficient proximity between the parties.

Suggested Rewording

Some common edits you can make to fit our content guidelines for Stock Avatars:

Instead of this

Try this

“You should pursue legal action”

“You can pursue legal action”

“It is likely you will recover your losses through a settlement or an award for compensation.”

“You may be able to recover your losses through a settlement or an award for compensation”

“Charged for a crime you didn’t commit? Give Elle Woods’ team a call, they’re the best around”

“If you’ve been charged for a crime you didn’t commit, you should speak to a criminal defense lawyer”

Key Reminder

✍️ Legal content covers a wide range of topics, and most of them are fully supported on Synthesia with the right framing, or with the use of a Custom Avatar.

If your script was flagged, the guidance above should help you identify what to adjust, whether that's shifting to a more neutral tone, removing specific advice, or switching to a Custom Avatar for more flexibility. Try applying one of the rewording patterns above and regenerate your video.

If you're unsure whether your content meets the guidelines, moving toward general, informational language is usually a safe starting point.
