Members on free and restricted licenses can now contribute to video creation in Synthesia β€” without needing a full paid license. When a full license member shares a video with you and gives you edit or full access permission, you can edit scripts and add screen recordings directly in the editor.

This makes it easier for translators, subject matter experts, and reviewers to collaborate on videos without requiring a license upgrade.

✍️ This feature is for workspace members only. Guests cannot edit scripts or add screen recordings, regardless of the permission level they are granted.

What you can do

When you are shared a video with edit or full access permission, you can:

  • Edit the script of an existing scene

  • Create a new screen recording and add it as a new scene to the draft

  • Preview any changes you make

When you are shared a video with comment only access, you can:

  • View the video

  • Leave comments

What you cannot do

Even with edit or full access permission, free and restricted license members cannot:

  • Create a new scene from scratch (except when creating a new AI screen recording, which generates a draft with one scene)

  • Edit an existing scene beyond the script β€” you can only comment on scenes

  • Generate or publish a video

  • Delete effects or transitions (though you can move them on words you have edited)

How to get started

To edit a video on a free or restricted license, a full license member in your workspace needs to share the video with you.

  1. Ask a full license member to share the video with you using the Invite option.

  2. They should set your permission level to edit or full access.

  3. Once invited, the video will appear in your Shared with me section.

  4. Open the video and select Edit to enter the editor.

  5. Select the scene you want to work on and edit the script or add a screen recording.

πŸ’‘ If you need to do more β€” such as creating new scenes or generating a video β€” you can request a full license upgrade. Your workspace admin will need to approve this.

Admin setup

For members to invite colleagues to videos, the Disable member invites setting in your workspace must be turned off. Admins can check this under Workspace Settings > Permissions.

This setting is not required, but it allows members to invite their teammates directly rather than going through an admin.

πŸ’¬FAQs

Can guests edit scripts too?

No. Script editing and screen recording for non-full license users is only available to workspace members on free or restricted licenses. Guests can view and comment on videos, but cannot edit scripts or add screen recordings

Does editing a script on a free or restricted license use a paid seat?

No. Editing scripts and adding screen recordings on a free or restricted license does not consume a paid license. Only users who generate or create videos use a full license seat.

What happens if I need to do more than edit a script?

If you need to create new scenes, generate videos, or access the full editor, you will need to be upgraded to a full license. Select any action that requires a full license and a pop-up will appear allowing you to send an upgrade request to your workspace admin.
