How do I use the Synthesia MCP in ChatGPT and Claude?

Overview

The Synthesia MCP lets you create Synthesia videos from the LLM where you already write your scripts. You no longer need to copy a script from ChatGPT or Claude and paste the script into Synthesia.

With Synthesia in ChatGPT and Claude, you can:

Describe the video you want, or use an exact script, to create a video draft.
Choose your workspace and a Style or template in a setup widget.
Generate the finished video and watch the video in the chat, including on mobile and tablet.
Make and edit Syren videos by describing what you want in your own words.
Search your existing video library and view video details from the chat.
Open any draft or video in the Synthesia editor to finish the video there.

Connect Synthesia to ChatGPT

To connect Synthesia to ChatGPT, install the Synthesia plugin from the ChatGPT marketplace. You don’t need a custom connector URL.

Open ChatGPT and go to Settings.
Select Apps or Plugins, depending on your account.
Search for “Synthesia.”
- You can also open the Synthesia listing in the ChatGPT marketplace.
Select Install plugin or Connect.
Sign in to your Synthesia account and review the requested permissions.
Confirm you can tag Synthesia in the message box, and then enter a prompt.

Reinstall the Synthesia plugin to use the latest version.

✍️ Your ChatGPT workspace admin controls whether Synthesia is available. If Synthesia shows Disabled by admin, ask your admin to enable Synthesia in Workspace settings.

Connect Synthesia to Claude

To connect Synthesia to Claude, add Synthesia as a custom connector using the Synthesia server URL. Synthesia is not listed in the Claude connector directory.

Personal Claude Accounts

To connect Synthesia to a personal Claude account, add a custom connector in your account.

In Claude, go to Customize, and then select Connectors.
Select +, and then select Add custom connector.
Enter a name, such as “Synthesia.”
Enter the server URL: https://mcp.synthesia.io/mcp
Leave the OAuth client ID and secret fields empty.
Select Add, and then follow the prompts to sign in to your Synthesia account.

Claude Team and Enterprise Workspaces

To connect Synthesia to a Claude Team or Enterprise workspace, a workspace admin adds the connector first, and then each member connects.

A Claude workspace admin adds the Synthesia connector:

Go to Organization settings, and then select Connectors.
Select Add, choose Custom, and then select Web.
Enter the server URL: https://mcp.synthesia.io/mcp
Leave the OAuth client ID and secret fields empty.
Select Add.

After the admin adds Synthesia, each workspace member connects:

Go to Customize, and then select Connectors.
Find Synthesia, labeled Custom, and then select Connect.
Sign in to your Synthesia account and approve the permissions.

Create a Studio Video in ChatGPT or Claude

To create a video in ChatGPT or Claude, start from a prompt or a script after you connect Synthesia.

In ChatGPT or Claude, describe the video you want, or paste the exact script you want to use.
In the setup widget, choose your Synthesia workspace.
Choose a Style or template for your video.
Review the draft.
- To change the draft, open the draft in the Synthesia editor before you generate the video.
Ask ChatGPT or Claude to generate the video.
Watch the finished video in the chat.
- To make more changes, open the video in the Synthesia editor.

💡 Want a specific avatar in your video? The setup widget doesn’t include an avatar or voice picker yet. Add the avatar you want to the Style or brand kit you use, and the video uses that avatar. To learn more, check out How do I use a Synthesia brand kit?

Create and Edit a Syren Video in ChatGPT or Claude

To create and edit a Syren video in ChatGPT or Claude, connect Synthesia, turn it on in your chat, and include “use Syren” in your prompt. The Syren player appears in the chat, and you refine the video by chatting.

Create a Syren Video

To create a Syren video, turn Synthesia on in your chat, and then ask for a video.

To create a Syren video in ChatGPT:

Start a new chat.
Tag Synthesia in the message box.
Ask ChatGPT for a video, and include “use Syren” in your prompt.
1. For example: “Turn this Notion page into a 60-second explainer with Syren.” - If your prompt doesn’t include “use Syren”, ChatGPT may create a video draft instead.
Watch the video in the Syren player in the chat.

To create a Syren video in Claude:

Go to Settings, and then select Connectors.
Select Synthesia.
In Tool permissions, confirm the Syren tools are not set to Blocked.
Start a new chat.
Select the + menu, and then switch Synthesia on.
Ask Claude for a video, and include “use Syren” in your prompt.
- For example: “Turn this Notion page into a 60-second explainer with Syren.”
- If your prompt doesn’t include “use Syren”, Claude may create a video draft instead.
Watch the video in the Syren player in the chat.

💡 Want to turn a document or conversation into a video? Syren can use content from your other connected tools, such as Slack threads, Notion pages, and Drive docs, so you don’t need to copy and paste the content.

Edit and Export a Syren Video

To edit a Syren video, describe the change you want in the same chat. ChatGPT and Claude keep the context of your earlier requests, so you can keep refining the video until you’re happy with the result.

In the chat, describe the change you want to make to the video.
Review the updated video in the Syren player.
Repeat steps 1 and 2 until you’re happy with the video.
Ask ChatGPT or Claude to export the full-quality video file.

Find Your Existing Videos

To find your existing videos, search your Synthesia video library from ChatGPT or Claude.

Ask ChatGPT or Claude to find a Synthesia video, such as “Find my onboarding videos in Synthesia.”
Review the results and video details in the chat.
Open the video in the Synthesia editor to make changes.

Things to Know

These limitations apply to Synthesia in ChatGPT and Claude during the public beta:

You can’t edit a video draft created without Syren from ChatGPT or Claude after the draft is created. Make changes in the Synthesia editor, or create the video with Syren in Claude to edit by chatting.
Claude supports Synthesia as a custom connector only.

Does using the Synthesia MCP use credits?

The Synthesia MCP uses credits the same way as the Synthesia editor. Draft creation is free. Video generation uses your plan’s video minutes based on the duration of the video. Enterprise plans have unlimited video generation. Syren videos consume credits. Pricing may change before general availability.

Does the Synthesia MCP cost extra on an Enterprise plan?

The Synthesia MCP has no extra cost during the public beta. Video generation stays unlimited on Enterprise plans. Pricing may change before general availability.

Can I edit my video from ChatGPT or Claude?

You can edit a Syren video in Claude by describing the change you want in the chat. You can’t edit a video draft created without Syren from ChatGPT or Claude yet. To edit a video draft or a generated video, open the draft or video in the Synthesia editor.

Why can’t I find Synthesia in the Claude connector directory?

Synthesia is not listed in the Claude connector directory. To use Synthesia in Claude, add a custom connector with the server URL https://mcp.synthesia.io/mcp.

Does the Synthesia MCP work with Microsoft Copilot?

The Synthesia MCP doesn’t support Microsoft Copilot.

Why did Claude create a video draft instead of a Syren video?

Claude may create a video draft when your prompt doesn’t ask for Syren. To create a Syren video, include “use Syren” in your prompt.

Can I upload my logo or images to Syren via MCP?

You can’t upload files, such as logos, images, videos, or PDFs, to Syren from Claude yet. To upload files to a video, use Syren in Synthesia.
