Overview

Photo Avatars are created from a photo and a consent video. To keep people safe and prevent misuse, every Photo Avatar submission must meet two critical requirements:

  1. Identity match between the uploaded photo and the consent video.

  2. Clear, informed consent from the person whose likeness will be used.

If either of these requirements is not met, the submission will be rejected.

As with any experimental technology, there are some limitations. While we work hard to make Photo Avatars accurate and realistic, you may encounter occasional issues during the generation process, including:

  • The avatar may not perfectly match your appearance.

  • Some facial details, expressions, or proportions may vary.

  • Unexpected visual variations.

Photo & Consent Video (Required)

Step 1: Upload a photo

You will be asked to upload one photo that will be used to generate your Photo Avatar.

Step 2: Record a consent video

You will also be asked to record a short consent video to confirm that the Photo Avatar is being created with valid consent and a passcode.

Guidelines for your uploaded photo

To help your Photo Avatar look its best, and to help your submission pass moderation, follow these guidelines:

  • The photo must show a real human person and match the person doing the consent video.

  • The photo should clearly show the person’s face so the system (and our moderators) can verify identity.

  • Do not upload:

    • AI-generated images.

    • Illustrations, avatars, mannequins, or dolls.

    • Heavily edited or manipulated images that obscure identity.

    • Someone who is not the person in the video.

    • Celebrities, historical figures, or deceased people.

Guidelines for your consent video

Your consent video must demonstrate explicit, informed, and unambiguous consent.

What your consent video must show

  • The person in the video must be the same person as in the uploaded photo.

  • The consent statement must be clearly spoken and must communicate that:

    • The person understands their likeness will be used to create a digital avatar.

    • The avatar can be used to generate videos.

  • The video must appear authentic and live, not staged or replayed.

  • The person will also need to verbally read the passcode.

What will result in rejection

We will reject submissions if:

  • The consent is missing, unclear, or incomplete.

  • The video appears edited, replayed, or staged.

  • Another person appears or speaks in a way that creates uncertainty about who is giving consent.

  • The video shows screens, still images, or playback instead of a real, live recording.

What we check during moderation

When reviewing Photo Avatar submissions, we focus on the following checks.

1) Identity match (critical)

We confirm the person in the uploaded photo is the same person in the consent video.

We may reject if:

  • The photo and video clearly depict different people.

  • The consent video shows a screen, still image, or playback.

  • Another person appears or speaks, creating uncertainty.

2) Consent validity (critical)

We confirm consent is explicit, informed, and unambiguous.

We may reject if:

  • Consent is unclear, incomplete, or missing.

  • The person appears confused, coerced, or uncertain.

  • The video cuts off before consent is complete.

3) Third-party likeness and impersonation risk

Photo Avatars must only be created with the consent of the person doing the photo avatar. We do not allow Photo Avatar submissions that appear to use someone else’s likeness without authorization.

Red flags include:

  • Attempts to create avatars of public figures, celebrities, or executives.

  • Submissions where it is unclear whether the submitter has rights to use the likeness.

If we suspect impersonation or unauthorized use, we will reject or escalate.

Need help?

If your submission is rejected, review the requirements above and submit a new photo and consent video that:

  • Clearly shows the same person in both photo and video.

  • Includes clear, informed consent.

  • Does not include third-party or public figure likeness.
