Types of Avatars
Synthesia offers a variety of Avatars to suit your needs:
Stock Avatars: A diverse collection of pre-built Avatars representing different professions and styles. Check out What stock Avatars are available in Synthesia?
Synthetic Avatars: Customizable synthetic stock Avatars. Check out How do I customize an Avatar to learn more.
Custom Avatars: Create a personalized Avatar from an image, video recording, or professional studio shoot. For new content, Synthesia recommends a photo-based Personal Avatar rather than a video-based Personal Avatar, which uses legacy technology. Avatar Builder: Create a custom avatar, lifelike or stylized, from a starter concept, style picker, or text prompt. Check out How do I create an avatar with Avatar Builder? to learn more.
š To keep content safe, respectful, and aligned with our values, all Avatar use must follow our Content Moderation Guidelines. Some topics may require a Custom (Studio or Personal) Avatar instead of a Stock Avatar, so check the guidelines before choosing one. Whether you're using a stock or personal Avatar, make sure your videos meet these standards.
Add an Avatar
Open your video in the Synthesia editor.
Select the Avatar tab in the top menu.
Choose an Avatar.
The selected Avatar will appear on the screen ā select and drag to reposition, as needed.
To remove an Avatar from a scene, select it on the canvas and press Delete.
š To remove an extra Avatar across scenes, select Remove all when the editor offers it. Removing the Avatar from one scene alone won't remove it from the others.
š In scenes built from an avatar-based stock template, hiding or deleting the Avatar removes the entire scene, not just the Avatar.

Change an Existing Avatar
Open your video in the Synthesia editor.
Select the Avatar on the canvas.
In the inspector panel, choose a replacement Avatar.
Find the notification that appears after you choose a replacement Avatar.
Select Change All to update the Avatar in every scene that uses the same speaker.

During video creation, your Avatar will not move their lips or be animated in any way, as this allows for your video to preview faster and more efficiently.

This usually happens when the wrong Avatar is assigned to the script. Check that the correct Avatar is linked to the matching text to ensure proper lip sync.
If the visible Avatar still doesn't speak in a generated video, open timeline view to look for another Avatar in that scene, including one that's off-screen. Check the script area to confirm the intended Avatar is assigned to speak. Remove an unintended extra Avatar, then regenerate the video.
If the generated video shows the right Avatar but the script box still selects an old one, select the correct Avatar in the script box and regenerate. This won't use extra credits if you don't change the script or video length.

Why doesn't Change All update every scene?
Change All only updates scenes that use the same speaker as the scene where you made the change. If a scene has a different assigned speaker, even one that looks the same, it won't be included. Open that scene and reselect the Avatar or voice there. If you replace the Avatar, select Change All in the notification to update other scenes with that speaker.
