How do I add an AI label to my videos?

Learn how to use Synthesia's AI content watermark setting to automatically add an "AI generated" label to every video your workspace produces, helping you meet AI transparency requirements like the EU AI Act.

Written by Jess Diaz-Gomes

Synthesia's AI content watermark setting lets workspace admins automatically add a visible "AI generated" label to every video the workspace produces. When the setting is on, the editor adds the label to every scene when a video is opened and whenever a new scene is added. Videos that do not go through the editor — such as those created via the API, or dubbed and translated videos — receive the label burned in at render time.

This helps your organisation meet AI transparency requirements such as Article 50 of the EU AI Act.

📌 Plan availability

AI Labels are available on all plans, however any Admin actions below will require an Enterprise plan.

If you'd like upgrade your plan to Enterprise, book a demo

Adding a visible AI-generated label to your video

The visible on-screen label is separate from the C2PA provenance signals: provenance is machine-readable and added automatically, while the visible label is a human-visible notice you switch on when you need it.

Under California’s AI Transparency Act, this visible label is an option Synthesia is required, as the provider, to make available to you but the choice to use it stays with you, and California does not require you to apply it.

  1. Select Media in the Editor

  2. Choose the AI Labels section

  3. Select the option you wish to use

  4. The label with display in the top right corner.

  5. Repeat process for all scenes.

    1. Alternatively you can copy and paste the label on your scenes

Enabling the AI content watermark for your whole workspace

Workspace admins can turn on the AI content watermark so that every video made in the workspace is labelled.

  1. Select Settings in the navigation.

  2. Select Collaboration.

  3. Toggle on AI content watermark.

Once enabled, the setting applies to every member of the workspace. Members cannot turn it off for themselves.

Enable the AI label for your own videos only

If the workspace setting is not enabled, you can still add the AI label to your own videos.

  1. Select Settings in the navigation.

  2. Select Preferences.

  3. Toggle on Automatically add the AI label to my videos.

✍️ If an admin has already enabled the workspace-level AI content watermark, this preference is switched on and locked — you cannot turn it off.

💬 FAQs

Can someone remove the label?

Yes, on standard scenes: deleting the label keeps it off that scene. On role play scenes, the "AI" badge cannot be removed.

Does the label apply to videos made before the setting was turned on?

Existing videos receive the label the next time someone opens them in the editor. Videos that were already rendered do not change until they are regenerated.

What happens to videos made via the API or through dubbing?

These videos receive the label burned in at render time, because they do not go through the editor.

Can a member turn off the workspace setting?

No. When the workspace admin has enabled the AI content watermark, members cannot disable it for themselves. Their personal preference shows as switched on and locked.
