How do I create an Interactive Avatar?

Learn how to create an Interactive Avatar in Synthesia by describing what it should do and answering a few questions.

Written by Meg Farley

You can create an Interactive Avatar in Synthesia without code. You describe what the Avatar should do, and Synthesia asks a few follow-up questions. Synthesia then writes the Avatar’s instructions.

✍️ Interactive Avatars cost 10 credits per minute.

Interactive Avatars is in beta. Features and options can change.

Create Your Interactive Avatar

To create an Interactive Avatar in Synthesia:

  1. Under Tools, select Interactive Avatars.

  2. Select New Interactive Avatar.

  3. Select Build in Studio.

  4. Select Start from scratch.

  5. Describe what your Avatar should do, the way you would describe a job to a new colleague. For example, type “A product expert who runs a live demo.”

    • To use a suggested prompt, select one of the suggestions.

    • To use the example shown in the text box, press Tab.

  6. Select Write the Interactive Avatar.

  7. Answer Synthesia’s follow-up questions. Synthesia asks about anything you left out.

    • Select an option, or type your own answer.

    • On a question that allows more than one option, choose every option that applies, and then select the button that shows your number of selections.

    • Select Skip to leave a question unanswered.

    • Select Edit to change an earlier answer.

  8. Wait while Synthesia writes the instructions and the first message. The editor opens with your Interactive Avatar as a draft.

Start From a Template

Synthesia also includes templates: Website assistant, Sales advisor, Shopping guide, Support agent, and Onboarding guide. Choose a template instead of Start from scratch. Synthesia then guides you through a short chat and writes the instructions for you. You can change everything later.

Edit Your Interactive Avatar

The editor opens after Synthesia writes your Avatar. The Build tab includes these settings:

  • Avatar: Who your visitors talk to. Select Change to choose a different Avatar.

  • Voice: The voice the Avatar speaks with. The voice follows the Avatar unless you pick one.

  • Instructions: Who the Avatar is, its mission, and its rules. Synthesia fills in sections for the Avatar’s role, how the Avatar works, its tone, its hard rules, and how the Avatar speaks in a live voice conversation. A character counter shows how much space is left.

  • Greeting: What the Avatar says to open every conversation. A character counter shows how much space is left.

  • Knowledge: The files your Avatar answers from, kept in a knowledge base. Choose a knowledge base, or create one, and then add files. In your instructions, mention a file to say when your Avatar should use the file.

The preview shows the widget with a Start call button. Switch between Web and Mobile to see each layout.

Add a Knowledge Base

A knowledge base is the set of files your Avatar answers from. Other Avatars in your workspace can use the same knowledge base. To give your Avatar a knowledge base:

  1. On the Build tab, find the Knowledge section.

  2. Open the Knowledge base list, and choose a knowledge base. To make a new one, select Create new knowledge base..., enter a Name, and then select Create.

  3. Select Add files, drop files into the upload area, or select browse.

    • You can add PDF, Markdown, or TXT files, up to 10 MB each.

  4. In your instructions, mention a file to say when your Avatar should use the file.

To replace or remove a file, select the ... menu on the file, and then choose Replace file... or Remove from Knowledge.

Publish Your Interactive Avatar

You publish an Interactive Avatar to make the Avatar live. To publish your Avatar:

  1. Select Publish.

  2. Check that the status changes from Draft to Live and that the Publish button changes to Published.

To let visitors reach your Avatar, deploy the Avatar as a widget, an embed, or a hosted link.
