How to use Effects in Synthesia?
Updated this week

Effects allow you to control how visual elements behave between their entry and exit triggers by adding Effects to specific words in the script. This gives you more control over how elements appear and interact with the spoken content.

To add an Effect to an Element :

1. Select an element on the canvas.

2. Hover over the word in the script where you want the effect to occur.

3. Click the + button to add an Effect.

4. Choose the desired effect from the available options.

5. Adjust the effect settings, zoom level, or position as needed.

Effects options:

Emphasis: These effects draw attention to a visual element when a specific word is spoken.

  • Blink: Adjust the motion speed and number of blinks.

  • Shake: Adjust the motion speed and intensity of the shake.

  • Pop: Adjust the motion speed and scale of the pop.

Zoom/Pan: This effect zooms in on a specific area of a video while ensuring a particular frame is visible when a word is spoken.

  • Adjust the zoom level and position as needed.

  • When setting a zoom in, you can add a zoom out and specify when the image should return to its original size.

  • After setting a zoom out, you can choose to set a zoom in again.

Camera Zoom: This effect zooms in on a specific area of an image when a particular word is spoken.

  • Adjust the zoom level and position as needed.

  • When setting a zoom in, you can add a zoom out and specify when the image should return to its original size.

  • After setting a zoom out, you can choose to set a zoom in again.

Play/Pause: This effect controls which frame of a video asset is visible at a specific word and whether the video should play or freeze.

  • Choose whether the video should play or freeze.

  • Use the scrubbing feature to select the exact frame where the effect should be applied.

  • If the video is visible from the start of the scene and you set a Play Effect trigger, the video will remain frozen on the chosen frame until the script reaches the trigger and then it will begin to play.

Notes:

  • All Entrance, Exit, and Effects animations associated with an element can be viewed, edited, added, or deleted from the inspector panel by selecting the element.

  • To delete an Effect animation, locate the trigger in the script, select the animation, and click the trash icon in the top right corner. Alternatively, select the element and clicking the "-" icon next to the effect you would like to delete in the inspector panel.

  • Effects work with different types of elements:

    • Emphasis effects work with all canvas elements.

    • Zoom/Pan works with video elements.

    • Camera Zoom works with image elements.

    • Play/Pause effects work only with video elements in Stretch & Loop/Cut playback modes. Play/Pause effects do not work for videos in Play Once mode.
