How do I manage scenes in my Synthesia video?

What are scenes?

Scenes in Synthesia are the building blocks of your video — similar to slides in a presentation.

Each scene can include an avatar, text, images, and video clips that work together to deliver one key message or idea. By combining multiple scenes, you can structure your video with a clear beginning, middle, and end, making your content more engaging and easier to follow.

Add a scene to a video project

  1. Within your project, click the Add scene button on the left of the canvas.

  2. You can either choose to use a blank scene or a Template option.

  3. The new scene will appear in the scene list, directly after the scene you are currently on.

Add Transitions Between Scenes

Transitions help your video flow smoothly from one scene to another.

  1. Open your video and select the scene where you’d like to add a transition.

  2. On the right-hand side of the canvas, toggle Scene Transition on.

  3. Choose a transition style from the available list.

  4. (Optional) When prompted, click Change All to apply that transition style to every scene in your video.

To preview your transitions, you’ll need to preview the entire video, as individual transitions won’t display in scene previews.

Copy a Scene from One Video to Another

If you’ve already perfected a scene, you can easily reuse it in another video.

  1. Open the source video containing the scene you want to copy.

  2. In the left-hand scene menu, right-click the scene and select Copy, or use the shortcut:

    • Command + C (Mac)

    • Ctrl + C (Windows)

  3. Open the destination video where you’d like to paste the scene.

  4. Right-click in the scene bar and select Paste, or use:

    • Command + V (Mac)

    • Ctrl + V (Windows)

When pasted, the scene will include all visual and audio elements, animations, and the full script.

💡 For more time-saving shortcuts, check the Keyboard Shortcuts documentation in Synthesia.

Replace the Layout of an Existing Scene

Sometimes you’ll want to change how a scene looks without losing your script.

  1. Open your video and find the scene you want to update.

  2. Right-click the scene in the left-hand scene selector.

  3. Choose Replace Layout from the scene settings.

  4. Select a new layout from the options available.

After replacing a layout, some titles, subtitles, or on-screen elements may shift or disappear — so double-check the scene and make adjustments as needed.

🚨 The script is preserved when replacing a layout, but some visual elements may be lost. You can also access more layouts by selecting the Template option when browsing layouts.

Delete a Scene

Cleaning up your project is just as important as building it.

To delete a scene:

  1. Open your video.

  2. Locate the unwanted scene in the left-hand menu.

  3. Right-click and select Delete, or simply press the Delete key on your keyboard. This instantly removes the scene from your video timeline.
