Learn about:

1. What is a WebCam Avatar

In simple terms, a WebCam Avatar is an avatar that resembles you, and you can create videos using it. The difference between Custom Avatars and WebCam Avatars is that you can create a WebCam Avatar through your own WebCam or laptop camera, eliminating the need to film in a studio.

Currently, your WebCam avatar will not have your voice, but you can choose from our broad selection of synthetic voices.

Please note that in order to create a WebCam avatar, you must be at least 18 years of age.

Here is an example of what a WebCam Avatar looks like.

2. How to create a WebCam Avatar

A WebCam avatar can be created by recording 2 minutes of footage of you speaking on camera with your WebCam. During the recording, you will be provided with a teleprompter that displays a script for you to read through.

To create your WebCam Avatar, after purchasing, click the Avatar button in the right-hand menu.

Click on the "create your own avatar" button located in the top right corner.

A pop-up will appear allowing you to "get started" with your WebCam Avatar. Click on it to begin.

To submit your WebCam avatar, follow these steps:

  1. Review the setup instructions.

  2. Record your consent.

  3. Follow the recording instructions for creating your avatar.

  4. Record your avatar.

  5. Submit your recording.

3. Footage Requirements

We recommend ensuring that the camera is stable, and that you remain relaxed while recording. Additionally, make sure you have a strong internet connection and are using the best computer and WebCam available to you, as this will impact the quality of your avatar.

It's a good idea to loosely memorise the script before recording. This allows you to focus on speaking clearly and looking into the camera, rather than reading from the script. Doing so will make your performance and avatar appear more natural.

4. What framings are available for a WebCam Avatar

At present, we only offer a close-up framing, which captures your avatar from the mid-torso up.

5. How long does it take to produce a WebCam Avatar

Once you submit your footage, it takes 5 business days to create your WebCam avatar. It will then be delivered directly to your Synthesia STUDIO account.

Your WebCam avatar will only be visible to you, and will appear in the avatar menu alongside our stock avatars.

6. Security

Your WebCam avatar is only available in your account, unless you specify otherwise.

We require explicit consent from the person creating the avatar. This means that it is impossible to impersonate people such as a celebrity or politician without their consent.

7. Cartoon Characters

It is not possible to take footage of cartoon characters and turn them into WebCam avatars.

8. How to purchase a WebCam Avatar

You can purchase a WebCam avatar by contacting our support team. WebCam Avatars cost $300/year and require an annual subscription.

9. WebCam Avatar Refunds

While refunds are not possible once your WebCam Avatar is produced and deployed to your STUDIO, our top priority is to ensure that you are satisfied with the outcome!

We understand that filming can be challenging and that you may be dissatisfied with how your avatar looks due to your recording. Thus, we allow you to resubmit your footage for a WebCam avatar (not a Custom avatar). To do so, simply follow the above steps and repeat the process.

The timescale for receiving your new WebCam avatar will remain at 5 working days. To avoid any issues with your WebCam Avatar and ensure that you receive it in the highest quality possible, please refer to all of the guides and requirements listed above prior to submitting your request/footage.

For any other issues, please contact our support team. They will be happy to provide further assistance and help you with any questions or concerns.
